Chateau Jemniště

Jemniště 1, 257 01 Postupice - Jemniště

Style of architecture Baroque, First mentioned in 1720

In 1720 František Adam Trauttmansdorff commissioned the well-known Czech architect F. M. Kaňka to build a castle that would correspond to his position as a leading nobleman. The castle is a typical noble residence of the High Baroque period and its decoration was done by leading artists such as M. B. Braun, V. V. Reiner or F. A. Scheffler.

Since 1868 the castle has been associated with the Sternberg family. The current owner, Jiří Sternberg, has renovated the monument and opened it to the public. Visitors can visit the Café Custoza, which sells original homemade desserts, and buy game from the castle's hunting grounds. You can stay in one of the three apartments. The grounds are also available for wedding ceremonies.

Along with the restoration of the chateau, the owner also takes great care of the park, which was founded around 1725 by Franz Adam Trauttmansdorff. At the end of the 18th century, Henry Rottenhan transformed the original French garden and extended it with a natural landscape park. The present owner had the path system restored, an alpinium, a rosarium, a natural pond, a libosad, a courtyard of honour and the entrance lime avenue repaired, and hundreds of plants and trees planted. A small menagerie with parrots, water birds, goats, llamas and kangaroos was also built in the park.
